If you're looking to buy chocolate online as a gift for a family member, friend or spouse we've got some great information and resources for you. Studies have found that good quality chocolate has amazing health benefits. Chocolate is truly one of the greatest gifts to mankind. If we learn what to buy and where to buy it, we can literally wrap a smile around the world.

A study was conducted using 21 healthy adults. They were split into two groups. The first group was given a daily supply of 1.6 ounces chocolate for two weeks. The second group received no chocolate at all.

All participants underwent a detailed evaluation of how well their blood vessels dilated and relaxed, something that healthy vessels do very well. Vessel stiffness indicates disease such as atherosclerosis. The study showed that those who received the chocolate every day did significantly better.

Remember that chocolate is derived from a plant, the same as fruits and vegetables, which are recommended for a healthy heart. Cocoa contains something called epicatechin, which is a member of an active group of compounds called plant flavoniods. Flavoniods keep cholesterol from sticking to the side of blood vessels, reduce the risk of blood clots and slow down immune responses that lead to clogged-up arteries.

For many, especially women, chocolate is truly a soulful pleasure. Researchers have even reported that the number-one craving for women is chocolate. According to Doreen Virtue PhD.D and author of Constant Craving, “love and emotional attachments are so important to women, and chocolate creates the feeling of being loved, cherished and understood.” Phenylethylamine (PEA) is a compound that naturally occurs in chocolate. When consumed, it releases endorphins in your brain that produce a mild feeling of euphoria, mimicking the sensation of being in love. So chocolate really is a love drug!

In my practice, I differentiate between physical, emotional and soulful cravings. On the physical level wmay crave chocolate because we are not receiving enough essential fats in our diet or because magnesium or certain amino acids and neurotransmitters are low (the feel-good hormones). Chocolate contains serotonin, theobromine and anandamide which all help to elevate mood and feelings of calmness. Our physical cravings are often about releasing our “hormones of happiness.” Often correcting our macro and micro-nutrients within our diet can help alleviate our physical cravings for chocolate.
